Workers stage a huge demonstration at DC Office, Ludhiana

Thousands of workers, under the leadership of worker’s organisations – Karkhana Mazdoor Union, Textile-Hosiery Kamgar Union, Gobind Rubber Limited Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and Pendu Mazdoor Union (Mashaal) – staged a fiery protest in front of DC Office and Police Commissioner, Ludhiana. Workers submitted a memorandum pertaining to their demands. To submit the memorandum workers marched for 22 kms from the Kanganwal area to the DC Office.
Workers demanded that the minimum salary be raised to twenty thousand rupees, strict action be taken against those owners who violate labor laws and usurp workers money, the owner of Gobind Rubber Limited Vinod Podar be arrested who is on the run after usurping the salary of more than 1500 workers since last many months and all the money be recovered from him, to provide safety measures against accidents in industries, Identity cards, Attendance record, ESI (Employees’ State Insurance), EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund), pay for women workers at par with men and all other labor laws must be implemented.
Further the administration must ensure that provision of cleanliness, safe drinking water, electricity, metalled roads be provided in the workers colonies, open government hospitals and dispensaries in the poor, under-privileged colonies, to guarantee the provision of benefits which the poor people are entitled to under the various Government Schemes, to stop mistreatment of poor workers in the government offices.
The memorandum was given to the Police Commissioner, Ludhiana to arrest the owner of Gobind Rubber Limited Vinod Podar who is on the run after usurping the salary of more than 1500 workers since last many months and all the money be recovered from him.
Another memorandum was submitted to the DC, Ludhiana pertaining to the problems of rural workers which included – increasing the wages of rural laborers, to remit the electricity bills and debt of rural laborers, to make the job cards of workers under the NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) Scheme and to remunerate the workers for the work done, etc.
The workers gathering was addressed by the President of Karkhana Mazdoor Union, Lakhwinder, President of Textile-hosiery Kamgar Union, Rajwinder, Pendu Mazdoor Union (Mashal) leader Sukhdev Bhundri, Bigul Mazdoor Dasta leader Baljit, Molder and Steel Workers Union President Harjinder Singh.
